A Joplin man pleaded guilty Monday to felony domestic assault on his girlfriend and mother of his children.
Ryan J. Maynard, 28, changed his plea to guilty in Jasper County Circuit Court on a charge of second-degree domestic assault as part of a deal with the prosecutor’s office that would limit the prison time he might be assessed to no more than four years. He was facing up to seven years for a conviction.
Circuit Judge David Dally delayed formal action on the plea bargain and ordered the completion of a sentencing-assessment report. The judge set Maynard’s sentencing hearing for July 9.
Maynard assaulted his live-in girlfriend Jan. 2. A probable-cause affidavit states that he was drunk and began hitting her in the face and ribs, and choking her with his hands. He also threw a full can of beer and a bag of canned goods at her, and forced her onto a couch, threatening to kill her if she moved.
During the assault, the victim called 911 without his knowledge, and portions of the assault and some of the threats he issued reportedly can be heard on a tape of the call, according to the affidavit.
