Kansas City man faces 10 years in state prison

— A Jasper County judge assessed a Kansas City man 10 years in prison Friday on a conviction for possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute.

Circuit Judge David Mouton sentenced Deanthany R. Ramey, 27, to the prison term at a hearing in Jasper County Circuit Court.

Ramey had entered an Alford plea to the charge on April 12 in a plea deal with the prosecutor’s office. He had been facing a Class A felony offense of first-degree trafficking in drugs and was allowed to plead down to the Class B felony instead. An Alford plea admits no guilt but acknowledges the probability of a conviction if the matter were to proceed to trial.

Mouton ordered that Ramey be placed in a long-term drug treatment program of the state prison system if he is eligible. If not, the judge ordered that he be placed in the general prison population.

Ramey was arrested on the trafficking charge Feb. 9, 2012, when Joplin police stopped a vehicle in the 1200 block of West 10th Street and both the driver and a passenger fled. Police found 12.6 grams of crack cocaine, a misdemeanor amount of marijuana, a handgun and $2,000 cash in the vehicle.

The passenger was located in a nearby house, and he identified Ramey as the driver and owner of the car, and the person who possessed the drugs, according to a probable-cause affidavit.

Court records show that Ramey was arrested again in Jasper County in March of this year on a charge of possession with intent to distribute.
