Two more face charges in probe of meth case

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department has announced two more arrests made in a probe of the manufacture and distribution of methamphetamine in the Baxter Springs area.

Brian E. Smith, 29, of Baxter Springs, was arrested July 25 in connection with the investigation, and Michelle Yates, 31, of Columbus, was arrested Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said.

Smith is charged with manufacturing meth, possession of chemicals with intent to manufacture the drug, possession of meth and possession of drug paraphernalia. Yates is charged with conspiracy to manufacture meth, manufacture of the drug, possession of chemicals with intent to manufacture meth, and distribution of precursor chemicals. Both remain in custody at the Cherokee County Jail on $50,000 bonds.

Eleven people have been arrested since July 1 in an investigation by the sheriff’s office, Baxter Springs police and the Southeast Kansas Drug Enforcement Task Force.
