Joplin man pleads guilty to charge in molestation case

From staff reports

A Joplin man pleaded guilty to a reduced charge and was assessed a suspended sentence Thursday in a case involving the alleged sexual abuse of an 11-year-old girl.

Geoff Gilstrap, 44, pleaded guilty in Jasper County Circuit Court to a misdemeanor count of sexual misconduct in a plea agreement with the prosecutor’s office. He had been facing a Class B felony count of first-degree child molestation for allegedly touching the girl’s genitals on more than one occasion during the summer of 2009.

In accordance with the plea deal, Associate Circuit Judge Richard Copeland assessed the defendant one year in jail, but suspended execution of the sentence and placed him on supervised probation for two years.

As part of the plea bargain, Gilstrap must complete a sex offender treatment program. He also will be required to register as a sex offender.
