JOPLIN, Mo. —
Joplin police are investigating a shooting Saturday night that left a woman dead and her estranged husband in critical condition.
Police said officers responding to a report of a shooting at 10:20 p.m. found 36-year-old Monica Webb in a home at 3415 E. 15th St., a victim of a gunshot wound. She was taken to Freeman Hospital West, where she died around 2 p.m. Sunday, said her uncle, Scott Webb, who said his niece’s maiden name also was Webb.
Jasper County Coroner Rob Chappel on Sunday said Monica Webb’s body is being taken to Columbia for an autopsy scheduled for Tuesday.
Police also found in the home 35-year-old Rondias “Ronald” Webb, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Freeman Hospital West in critical condition, according to police.
Joplin police said the couple were estranged. Police were not commenting on the shooting beyond a brief statement issued Sunday.
According to court records, the two had a history of problems.
On Sept. 23, Ronald Webb was charged with third-degree domestic assault stemming from an incident with Monica Webb, although no details were available Sunday. According to online court records, he did not appear for a hearing on the charge on Nov. 7, and a warrant for his arrest was issued.
Jasper County Family Court Commissioner Jerry Holcomb issued an order of protection on Sept. 23. Ronald Webb was charged with violating that order of protection on Nov. 8 and was scheduled for arraignment on that charge on Dec. 17.
Scott Webb said Monica Webb’s family was trying to piece together what had happened over the past few months. He said he had stopped by his niece’s apartment on Sunday to talk to neighbors about everything that had happened.
“She didn’t let us know how bad this was,” Scott Webb said. “She had said that she was seeking a divorce from him, and she had posted to Facebook that she was going out last night.”
Scott Webb said Monica Webb was not responsive at the hospital before she died.
“They said she was brain-dead when she got there,” he said.
