Loma Linda man accused of acting as police officer

A Loma Linda man is facing a felony weapon charge for allegedly stopping a vehicle in Joplin and acting as if he were a police officer.

Kristopher C. Peters, 46, is charged with unlawful use of a weapon during an incident Friday afternoon in a parking lot at 1717 W. Seventh St.

Police Cpl. Chuck Niess said Peters is accused of stopping a car, identifying himself as a detective and demanding to see the identification of its two male occupants. When the occupants questioned the authenticity of his claim to be a policeman, he allegedly pulled a handgun that he was wearing on his hip part way out in an intimidating manner, Niess said.

Niess said the suspect let the occupants of the vehicle go with a warning, and they called police to check him out. Peters was located outside the Wal-Mart store on West Seventh Street a short time later and was arrested on suspicion of impersonating an officer.
