Oklahoma man draws charge of sexual assault

The Jasper County prosecutor’s office has charged an Oklahoma man with sexually assaulting a woman early Friday morning in a Joplin motel room.

Jimmy D. Underwood, 34, of Poteau, Okla., was arrested in the parking lot of the Plaza Motel at 2612 E. Seventh St. about six hours after the alleged assault.

A 34-year-old Webb City woman reported that she had spent the night in a room of the motel with Underwood and another man. She went to sleep in a bed with the other man but later awakened to find that man asleep on the floor and Underwood assaulting her, she told police.

Joplin police Lt. Matt Stewart said a rape kit was conducted on the alleged victim at Freeman Hospital West.
