Two fire calls to same home subject of probe

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Two fire calls Sunday night to the same home in Pittsburg have led to an investigation by local and state fire officials.

Pittsburg fire Chief Scott Crain said firefighters called at 6:23 p.m. to the 100 block of West Jefferson Street to put out a small fire in the basement of the single-story home that had spread into a first-floor closet.

Crain said no one was home at the time in the house occupied by the family of Miguel Fernandez. A firefighter suffered heat exhaustion and was taken to Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, where he was treated and released.

Firefighters were called back to the same residence at 10:55 p.m. when a second fire damaged two bedrooms and a bathroom. Crain said both fires were regarded as suspicious, and a state fire marshal is looking into the matter.
