Man’s death in jail subject of autopsy; foul play not issue

The Joplin Globe

CARTHAGE, Mo. — The sheriff’s office is investigating the death of an inmate early Tuesday at the Jasper County Jail.

Richard H. Watson, 43, of Joplin, was found unresponsive in his cell just after 5 a.m., according to a sheriff’s office release. Emergency medical crews were called, but efforts to revive Watson were unsuccessful.

Foul play is not suspected in the death. Sheriff Archie Dunn said Watson was by himself in a cell, and he was discovered by a jail employee. He said an autopsy was to be conducted late Tuesday in Springfield, but he was uncertain when results would be available.

Watson was in jail for violating an order of protection issued by Jasper County Circuit Court in August.
