Man faces two felony charges in firing of shot

A 31-year-old man has been charged with two felonies in connection with the firing of a weapon Sunday afternoon in Joplin.

Police Cpl. Chuck Niess said officers responded at 4:17 p.m. to a home at 1145 S. Pennsylvania Ave. where a man who reportedly fired a shot at 921 S. Chestnut Ave. had gone.

Daniel Nevarez, 31, eventually was arrested at the Pennsylvania Avenue address. He was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, misdemeanor domestic assault and misdemeanor resisting arrest.

Niess said Nevarez had been in an apparent argument with his girlfriend, Gicela DeLeon, 35, at their residence on Chestnut Avenue during which a shot reportedly was fired. No injuries were reported in the incident, he said.
