U.S. attorney’s office to prosecute Vernon County man

NEVADA, Mo. — The U.S. attorney’s office in Springfield has taken over the prosecution of a Vernon County man accused of taking sexual advantage of a Georgia teen over the Internet.

Curtis L. Bowman, 42, made an initial appearance Tuesday in federal court in Springfield, where he was charged with sexual exploitation of a child.

Bowman was arrested Friday when a federal search warrant was served at his home near Nevada based on an investigation by police in Cobb County, Ga. State charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and possession of child pornography were filed against him Friday, but the Vernon County sheriff had indicated that he expected that the U.S. attorney’s office would assume prosecution of the case.

Bowman has been transferred to federal custody and has a detention hearing scheduled for Friday in U.S. District Court in Springfield.

Bowman is accused of posing as a woman online to make the acquaintance of a 16-year-old girl from Kennesaw, Ga., and persuade her to send him nude photographs of herself. He also reportedly has admitted setting up “dates” for the girl with men he contacted online using the photos she sent him.

Emails between Bowman and the girl reportedly contained images of her engaged in sex with men.
