Firefighters rescue woman, dog from burning house

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Firefighters rescued a woman trapped inside her burning home early Wednesday in Carthage.

Fire Chief Chris Thompson said the woman in her 60s awoke to the smell of smoke in her house in the 1000 block of Forest Street and phoned 911. She told the dispatcher she was trapped in her bedroom.

“There was too much smoke and fire that prevented her from getting out,” Thompson said.

Two of the firefighters responding to the 3:17 a.m. call entered the single-story home through the front door and knocked down a blaze in the living room to get to her bedroom. They passed her and her dog out a window to other firefighters.

The woman did not suffer any burns, Thompson said. She was taken to Mercy McCune-Brooks Hospital in Carthage for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Thompson said the home had heavy smoke, heat and water damage. An overheated electrical cord in the living room is believed to have been the cause of the fire, he said.
