Man ordered to stand trial in robbery case

A Joplin man, accused of posing as a pastor to get inside an elderly woman’s home and rob her, waived his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Jasper County Circuit Court.

Associate Judge Richard Copeland ordered David L. Martin, 33, bound over for trial and set his initial appearance in a trial division of the court for April 14.

A probable-cause affidavit alleges that Martin robbed an 86-year-old woman Sept. 11 of last year by going to the door of her home on 26th Street and representing himself as a pastor. She let him inside, and Martin began reading the Bible and talking to her about God, the affidavit states.

But, suddenly, he grabbed a fanny pack she was wearing around her waist and forcefully took it from her. She suffered a cut and some bruises to her hands and wrists trying to resist him, according to the affidavit. He allegedly took $70 in cash from the fanny pack and threw her phone across the room before leaving her house.

Martin told police that he used the money to secure a room at the Motel 6 in Joplin, according to the affidavit.
