Clerk thwarts robbery attempt at Monett station

From staff reports

MONETT, Mo. — A clerk thwarted the would-be robber of a service station Sunday night when she refused to open the store’s cash register for him, according to Monett police.

Police were called at 8:20 p.m. to Herd’s North Service Station at 600 Cleveland Ave. after the reported robbery attempt. The clerk on duty told police that a man wearing a mask and armed with a rifle had entered the store and demanded that she open the cash register.

When she refused, the man pointed the gun at her and threatened to shoot, she told police. She once again refused to comply with his demand, and he ran away without having obtained any money.

The man was described as between 30 and 45 years old, about 5 feet 2 inches to 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing about 130 pounds. The clerk told police that he was dressed in black, including black gloves and a stocking cap, and was wearing a rubber Halloween mask.

Police said they were asking that anyone with information about the robbery attempt to contact the department at 417-235-4241 or the Barry/Lawrence Crime Stoppers tips line at 417-354-8477 or 1-888-635-8477.
