Wheaton man dies in traffic accident in Barry County

One man was killed and a second was injured in a single-vehicle accident at 2:40 p.m. Thursday on Missouri Highway 76, two miles southeast of Wheaton in Barry County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

James M. Bell, 51, of Wheaton, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by the Barry County coroner, the state patrol said. Jared T. Spears, 26, of Monett, was taken by ambulance to Cox Medical Center South in Springfield.

Spears was the driver and Bell the passenger in a westbound vehicle that ran off the road and overturned, throwing both occupants out, the patrol said.

• A Sarcoxie man was injured in a single-vehicle accident at 4:08 p.m. Thursday on Route U, three miles south of Sarcoxie in Jasper County, the state patrol said.

Zachary A. Whisner, 20, was taken to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, the patrol said.

Whisner was driving a northbound car that slid off the road and struck a mailbox and embankment before overturning, the patrol said.

• A Lamar man was injured in a two-vehicle accident at 3:55 p.m. Wednesday on a county road three miles south of Lamar in Barton County, the state patrol said.

Ronald E. Richter, 77, was taken to Barton County Memorial Hospital in Lamar, the patrol said.

Richter was driving a southbound car that collided with an eastbound vehicle driven by Anthony C. Garrett, 24, of Lamar, when Richter failed to yield the right of way, the patrol said.
