Two vehicle stops conducted Tuesday by police in Joplin led to felony drug charges being filed against three people.
An officer stopped a pickup truck on a ramp of Interstate 44 at Hearnes Boulevard about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday and arrested Juan L. Simmons, 29, of Joplin, for allegedly driving while his license was suspended. A passenger in the vehicle, Nicole L. Pefferman, 30, of Joplin, was arrested on some outstanding warrants.
Police Cpl. Chuck Niess said both Simmons and Pefferman were charged with felony possession of a controlled substance when a search of the vehicle reportedly turned up some methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and a handgun with the serial number filed off. A misdemeanor count of possession of a defaced firearm also was filed against Simmons.
A traffic stop about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday near Ninth and Main streets led to charges against Eric U. Proctor, 41, of Neosho, of driving while his license was suspended and possession of hydrocodone pills. Niess said four of the narcotic pills and a syringe reportedly were discovered in a lunchbox inside Proctor’s car after his arrest on the traffic offense.
