Authorities arrest Arcadia man in theft of eight calves, ATV

GIRARD, Kan. — Authorities have arrested a suspect in the recent thefts of some calves, an all-terrain vehicle and other items from a resident of northeast Crawford County.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release that investigators this week developed a 21-year-old Arcadia man as a suspect in the Feb. 2 theft and sale of eight calves weighing between 400 and 500 pounds each.

He was questioned about the theft on Tuesday. The sheriff’s office said that led investigators to believe that he has been responsible for several other thefts from the same victim over a three-month period, including the theft of an ATV that has been recovered. The sheriff’s office said charges were being filed against the man on Wednesday.

Authorities in Kansas have not indicated any connection to recent thefts of adult cattle and calves in Southwest Missouri.

Eighteen head of cattle, including 17 calves, were reported stolen over the weekend from a property along County Road 10 near Sarcoxie. An additional 10 head were taken from a property on Farm Road 1020 near Stotts City. Five of those were crossbred newborn calves, and the other five were adult cows, according to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department.
