Officials implement lockdowns at schools during search for man

From staff reports

JOPLIN, Mo. — Joplin’s Catholic schools and the Memorial 9-10 campus of Joplin High School implemented lockdowns Thursday morning while Joplin police were attempting to locate a man in the general vicinity of the schools.

Joplin High School implemented the lockdown at the Memorial campus at 8:50 a.m., and the nearby Catholic schools did the same. The lockdowns were lifted within about 30 minutes.

Police Lt. Brian Lewis said police were looking for a man who made some comments to family members that warranted him being taken into custody for a 96-hour mental evaluation. The man eventually was found at the intersection of Eighth Street and Pearl Avenue and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

Police said no specific threat was issued regarding a particular school or schools. The schools were notified of the matter and the lockdowns were implemented as a precautionary measure, police said.
