$20,000 in jewelry stolen from store at Northpark Mall

Joplin police are investigating the theft of $20,000 worth of rings from a jewelry store in Northpark Mall at 101 N. Range Line Road.

Cindi’s Diamonds reported that the theft took place between 8:50 and 9:06 p.m. Tuesday, when seven people entered the store at once in two different groups, according to police Cpl. Chuck Niess.

While a sales clerk was tending one of the men who asked to see some rings, another man reached across the counter, took a tray of rings and concealed them on his person, Niess said. He said the clerk did not observe the theft, and the crime went unnoticed until all seven of the people left and employees reviewed surveillance video.

In a separate shoplifting incident Tuesday night in the Wal-Mart store at 1501 S. Range Line Road, a woman was detained by store employees for allegedly attempting to leave without paying for more than $1,000 worth of clothing and other items.

Niess said Kaycee D. Stephenson, 18, who listed no current address, was turned over to police and charged with felony theft.
