Woman ordered to stand trial in assault case

The first of five co-defendants in an alleged drug-related felony assault in September near Carthage has been ordered bound over for trial.

Chenea L. Deckard, 20, of rural Carthage, waived her right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Jasper County Circuit Court in Joplin on charges of first-degree assault and manufacturing a controlled substance. Associate Judge Richard Copeland set the defendant’s initial appearance in a trial division of the court for Jan. 6.

Deckard is one of five suspects charged in connection with an assault of Tyler Barnum on Sept. 28 at 13489 Little Lane. According to a probable-cause affidavit, four of the assailants, including Deckard, were armed with baseball bats and one with a knife when they surrounded Barnum, ordered him to his knees and attacked him.

The affidavit alleges that Barnum was struck in the arm with a bat and kicked in the head while the assailants threatened to kill him. He later told Jasper County sheriff’s deputies that they were mad at him about a drug deal that had taken place a few days previously.

Deputies who responded to the address discovered an alleged methamphetamine lab and three boxes of pseudoephedrine. Deckard and three others, Dusty Hodson, Michelle Brady and Daniel Rendon, are facing felony drug counts as well as the assault charge. Maegan Bearden is charged only with the assault.
