Two women face shoplifting charges

Two women have been charged with felony stealing in connection with alleged shoplifting incidents earlier this month at the Sears store in Northpark Mall in Joplin.

Whitney Layman, 24, of Baxter Springs, Kan., and Tisha A. Wahpepah, 23, of Quapaw, Okla., were charged following their detention by store employees May 5.

Cpl. Chuck Niess of the Joplin Police Department said the suspects were caught taking almost $700 worth of clothing and other items from the store without paying for them. Niess said the suspects also allegedly admitted taking two vacuum cleaners, a steam cleaner, a purse and other items from the same store two days previously.

A male in the two women’s company was arrested as well, but no felony charge was filed against him.
