Joplin man faces charge in theft of pickup truck

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department arrested a Joplin man Thursday in the theft of a pickup truck in September of last year.

Travis C. Perry, 39, was arrested about 12:20 p.m. Thursday on a charge of stealing a motor vehicle.

The sheriff’s office said in a news release that a 2006 Dodge pickup truck was taken from 4942 Belle Center Road on Sept. 23. The owner of the truck reported to deputies that the day previous Perry had been at the address talking to him about possibly buying the truck from him.

While sheriff’s deputies were investigating the theft, the victim began receiving calls from Oklahoma banks about someone trying to cash checks taken from a checkbook that he had left in the truck. The sheriff’s office said deputies sent information out to area law enforcement agencies about the theft of the vehicle and a deputy in Ottawa County, Okla., located the stolen truck in the parking lot of a casino.

Casino security surveillance video was viewed and a suspect was identified, leading to the arrest of Perry, according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department.
