Carl Junction man draws prison term in porn case

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A federal judge assessed a Carl Junction man 12 years in prison Thursday for possessing, receiving and distributing child pornography, and tacked on a financial kicker to his punishment.

At a hearing in federal court in Springfield, U.S. District Judge Greg Kays ruled that Jason Hill, 27, must serve the term without any chance of parole. He also ordered the defendant to pay restitution to a child depicted in the pornography seized in his case. Hill must pay the victim $3,000 within 30 days, or owe him $5,000 in restitution, the judge ruled.

The defendant was convicted on one count of possessing and one count of receiving and distributing child pornography at the conclusion of a three-day trial that ended Sept. 27.

Hill had been arrested as the result of an investigation by the Southwest Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force. A task force officer reportedly discovered child pornography being distributed over the Internet via peer-to-peer, file-sharing software on the defendant’s computer.

Of 773 files accessed through Hill’s computer, 551 had titles suggestive of pornographic content, while 266 had titles suggestive of child pornography in particular, according to the U.S. attorney’s office for the Western District of Missouri. Twenty-five of those files had been identified in previous investigations as containing child pornography, the U.S. attorney’s office said.

A search warrant was executed at Hill’s home. Four computers and various computer media were seized. Task force members reportedly found three videos portraying the sexual abuse of children under the age of 14 and four additional images of child pornography on the seized items.

The federal prosecutor’s office said there also was evidence that the computers formerly contained additional images of child pornography.
