Murder warrant issued in fatal domestic shooting

GROVE, Okla. — Police believe Doyle Handle shot himself after fatally shooting Dena Davenport during a domestic disturbance Thursday night at their residence in Grove.

Officers responded to a 6:55 p.m. report of a shooting at the couple’s home on Wood Street on the southwest side of Grove and found Handle, 52, in the front yard with a gunshot wound to his jaw.

Davenport, 49, was discovered inside the home with a gunshot wound to her head.

Grove Police Chief Mark Morris said both of the injured were taken initially to Integris Grove Hospital, where Davenport was pronounced dead. Handle later was flown by medical helicopter to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, where he underwent surgery and remained in an intensive care unit on Friday.

Morris said “some sort of domestic dispute” preceded the shooting. A handgun was recovered, but the police chief declined to specify the caliber of the gun or where it was located.

A no-bond warrant charging Handle with first-degree murder has been issued, Morris said. Agents with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation are assisting Grove police in the case. Davenport’s body has been turned over to the state medical examiner’s office in Tulsa for an autopsy.

“She’s from a family that’s very well-known in the community and liked,” Morris said of Davenport. “It’s a very tragic situation.”
