SPRINGFIELD, Mo. —
The U.S. attorney’s office for the Western District of Missouri has charged a Carl Junction man with receiving and distributing child pornography.
The criminal complaint against James Lee Hagerman, 50, was filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Springfield after an investigation by the Southwest Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force.
An affidavit filed with the complaint states that an investigator with the task force was probing the sharing of child pornography files on a peer-to-peer network April 24 and located a computer address with numerous files of suspected child pornography. Three of the suspected files were downloaded by the investigator and confirmed to be illicit material, the affidavit states.
The investigator subsequently subpoenaed the server for the name of the subscriber at the Internet protocol address and was provided the name of a woman on Cherry Street in Carl Junction.
A search warrant was served at the address on Thursday of last week, and Hagerman, the only person at the residence at the time of the search, was interviewed after being read his Miranda rights. During the interview, he allegedly admitted searching for and downloading child pornography from the Internet using the peer-to-peer file-sharing network under the screen name “jimlee.”
Hagerman told investigators that he had been downloading child pornography for about 10 years and to possessing about 1,000 illicit videos in hidden files on his computer so his wife would not find them, according to the affidavit. Although he has yet to be charged with the offense, the affidavit alleges that Hagerman further admitted to investigators that he has been sexually abusing an underage girl over the past two years.
Hagerman was arrested and taken to Joplin City Jail pending the filing of the charge Friday in federal court.
