Man shot in leg in gun accident outside church

NEOSHO, Mo. — A 22-year-old man was accidentally shot in the leg with a handgun Friday afternoon outside a church in Neosho, police said.

Cody McConnaughey, of Neosho, was taken to Freeman Neosho Hospital and then transferred to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin after the shooting at 4:17 p.m. on the porch of the Church of the Nazarene at 1045 Fairhill Drive.

Police Chief David McCracken said McConnaughey and a friend were disassembling a 9 mm handgun when the weapon discharged and the round passed through his leg. The police chief said officers determined that the shooting was accidental.
