A deadly May twister may have punched a hole in Joplin and Duquesne two years ago, but the resolve to repair it will help other communities stand strong when they face similar disasters. That was the message of state and national diginitaries to a crowd of about 2,500 who observed the second anniversary of Joplin’s devastating May 22, 2011, storm during a ceremony Wednesday in Cunningham Park.

Normal operations resume at Joplin schools after lockout

JOPLIN, Mo. — Activities have resumed at all Joplin schools after a district-wide lockout implemented earlier Wednesday afternoon, Superintendent C.J. Huff said.

As part of the lockout procedure, which was put into effect at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, all doors were kept locked, with visitors allowed entrance only if someone let them in, and all students were kept inside. The school day continued as normal for students inside their buildings during this time, he said.

Huff said the lockout was lifted by about 2 p.m., with normal operations resuming at all schools at that time.

The lockout was a precautionary measure, Huff said, because of a post on an individual’s Facebook page that police had flagged Tuesday as possibly representing a threat to schools. Huff said the individual was located by Wednesday afternoon and taken in by police for questioning.
