Man dies, others hurt when truck hits diner

From staff reports

NEVADA, Mo. — A 54-year-old Nevada man was killed and at least two others seriously injured late Friday afternoon when a traffic accident just off of Highway 71 sent a tractor-trailer rig slamming into a restaurant.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol identified the fatality victim as Joseph E. Cole, who apparently was a customer at the Quick Dine restaurant at 1331 N. Osage Blvd. in Nevada.

Two other customers, John Becker, 72, of Nevada, and Roger E. Berning, 60, of El Dorado Springs, were taken by air ambulance to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin.

A patrol report characterized the injuries of another diner, Pamela S. Hoover, 47, of Nevada, as moderate. She was taken to Nevada Regional Medical Center.

The accident occurred, according to the report, when Patrick Crews, driver of a car, pulled from a stop sign and into the path of a truck rig driven by Daniel R. Coffman, 60, who was coming off the ramp at the U.S. 71 Business exit.

The truck driver tried unsuccessfully to avoid hitting the car, and then slammed into the restaurant, striking several customers, according to the patrol.

Neither driver of the two vehicles was injured, the patrol report suggested.

Further details were not available late Friday night.
