Joplin man facing weapon charge

A Joplin man is facing a felony weapon charge after he allegedly forced another man to drive him around town at knifepoint until he finally fell asleep in the car.

Christopher J. Sanders, 36, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon after his arrest Thursday in the 500 block of West C Street.

Harlan J. King, 20, told police that he and a male friend ran into Sanders at a convenience store at 3 a.m. Thursday at Fourth Street and St. Louis Avenue. King, who had a slight acquaintance with Sanders, agreed to give him a ride.

Joplin police Lt. Matt Stewart said King said Sanders ultimately began demanding to be taken to several places and eventually pulled out a knife and threatened to kill King if he did not continue driving him wherever he asked. After being taken to several addresses, Sanders fell asleep in the car. King parked the vehicle, walked to his friend’s home and called police, Stewart said.

Officers located Sanders still inside the parked vehicle and placed him under arrest. A folding knife was found in his possession, Stewart said.
