A young mother’s quick reaction to an attempted burglary of her home in the middle of the night led to the arrest and charging of a suspect, according to Joplin police.
Police Cpl. Chuck Niess said a 26-year-old woman heard a noise at her house on West 19th Street about 1:10 a.m. Wednesday and spotted an intruder climbing in through a bedroom window.
Niess said the woman grabbed her child, fled to a neighbor’s house and called police. Officers located a suspect a short distance away and took him into custody, Niess said.
Shawn M. Simmons, 20, 1618 S. Virginia Ave., was charged with first-degree burglary. Niess said it turned out that the woman knew the suspect, but he had no right to be entering her home through a window in the middle of the night.
