A Quapaw, Okla., man was killed early Thursday in a car-pedestrian accident on a rainy U.S. Highway 69 Alternate near the Quapaw city limits, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
Harold Smith, 54, the pedestrian, was struck by a Toyota pickup at 5:36 a.m., the patrol said. He died at the scene of head and internal injuries. The body was taken to Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami, Okla., and then to the state medical examiner’s office in Oklahoma City.
The patrol said Smith was walking in the westbound lane of the highway when he was struck by the pickup. He was thrown into the eastbound lane. The vehicle left the scene.
• A Pittsburg, Kan., man was injured in a one-vehicle accident at 10:56 p.m. Wednesday at Seventh and Georgia streets in Pittsburg while fleeing officers, Pittsburg police said.
Justin David Blythe, 36, was taken to Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg and then was flown to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin.
Police said the pickup was westbound on Seventh Street. It turned on Georgia Street, went out of control and struck a tree.

A suspect accused of trying to run down two Joplin police officers with a sport utility vehicle early Sunday was winged in an arm and hand when the officers shot at him in response, police said.
