Guilty plea entered; sentence suspended

A resident of Columbus, Kan, has pleaded guilty in Jasper County Circuit Court in Joplin to a reduced charge in a felony assault case

Andrew Saiz, 39, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault in a plea deal with the Jasper County prosecutor’s office and received a suspended sentence.

The defendant had been charged with a felony assault on Blake J. Engelage, 32, on Sept. 19, 2010, at the Kitchen Pass bar and restaurant, 1212 S. Main St. in Joplin.

A probable-cause affidavit alleged that Saiz punched Blake until he lost consciousness, and that Blake had to spend time in a hospital with a broken jaw.

Circuit Judge Gayle Crane sentenced Saiz to one year in jail, with execution of the sentence suspended and the defendant placed on probation for a year.
