Trial ordered or man facing weapon charge

A Joplin man waived his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday on a felony gun charge he is facing in Jasper County Circuit Court.

Don C. Whitfield, 51, was ordered bound over for trial on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm. Associate Judge Richard Copeland set Whitfield’s initial appearance in a trial division of the court for July 8.

The charge stems from a search warrant that the Jasper County Drug Task Force served on Jan. 26, 2012, at 908 W. Fifth St. in Joplin. A .22-caliber pistol was seized in the search, according to a probable-cause affidavit. The affidavit states that Whitfield is prohibited from possessing firearms as a convicted felon.
