Former camp employee sentenced to 20 years for child sex crime

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Matthew O’Dell, 29, of Springfield, was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court to 20 years in federal prison without parole for sexually exploiting children.

O’Dell was formerly employed at YMCA Camp Wakonda in Lawrence County.

He pleaded guilty last year, admitting to making a video recording of a 13-year-old child at his residence, showing the child engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

Springfield police in 2009 conducted a search warrant on a storage unit in which O’Dell had placed belongings, locating the digital video recording.

Before sentencing, the court heard testimony about several others allegedly victimized by O’Dell.
