Joplin man pleads guilty to second-degree assault

A Joplin man pleaded guilty Monday to a felony assault of another man more than a year ago in rural Jasper County.

Derek Rumble, 21, pleaded guilty in Jasper County Circuit Court in Joplin to second-degree assault in a plea agreement with the prosecutor’s office.

The defendant’s plea deal would limit the prison time that he might be required to serve to no more than three years. He had been facing the possibility of receiving up to seven years if convicted of the crime.

Circuit Judge David Dally delayed formal acceptance or rejection of the plea deal and ordered the completion of a sentencing-assessment report. The judge set Rumble’s sentencing hearing for April 29.

A probable-cause affidavit states that Rumble broke the nose of Bradley Schrader and gave him a concussion during an altercation Nov. 19, 2011, near 17343 Ariel Lane. Schrader’s girlfriend told a Jasper County sheriff’s deputy that she found Schrader lying on the ground and Rumble walking away from him.
