A rural Joplin man pleaded guilty Monday to robbing an adult video store more than two years ago in a plea deal limiting the prison time that he might receive to no more than seven years.
Lonnie K. Barnard, 24, was facing a charge of first-degree robbery for an armed holdup Oct. 9, 2010, at the Westside Adult Video Store, 5155 W. Seventh St. In a plea deal with the prosecutor’s office, he pleaded guilty to the lesser offense of second-degree robbery at a hearing in Jasper County Circuit Court.
A probable-cause affidavit states that Barnard brandished a crowbar and a can of Mace during the robbery and smashed a display case to scare the store’s clerk into complying with his demands. He stole $3,000 in cash and merchandise in the robbery, according to the affidavit.
In a subsequent search of his home, Jasper County sheriff’s deputies reportedly recovered a vaporizer and three bottles of lubricant taken in the robbery. They also recovered a compound bow reported stolen in a burglary in Newton County, and the defendant was charged with receiving stolen property as well as robbery.
The deal the defendant reached with the prosecutor’s office would dismiss counts of burglary and possession of a controlled substance that were brought against the defendant in 2012. But the count of receiving stolen property does not appear to be included in the deal.
Circuit Judge Gayle Crane ordered a sentencing-assessment report on Barnard and set his sentencing hearing for April 22.
