Boggs receives life sentence in murder trial

MIAMI, Okla. — A judge assessed Dustin Boggs life in prison Friday for the murder of Danyel Borden, allowing Boggs the possibility of eventual parole as the jury recommended at his trial two weeks ago.

District Judge Robert Haney sentenced Boggs, 25, to the term at a hearing in Ottawa County District Court in Miami.

Jurors had convicted Boggs of first-degree murder in the stabbing and shooting death of Borden, 21, on June 14, 2012. He must serve at least 85 percent of the life term before he will be eligible for parole. Since a life term is considered the equivalent of 45 years under Oklahoma law, he must serve at least 38 years and three months.

The judge granted the defendant credit for a little more than a year served in jail since his arrest.

Boggs indicated at the hearing that he intends to appeal the conviction. Boggs had been engaged to Borden up until a few weeks before the slaying on County Road 610 outside Miami.
