Youths detained following chase of stolen vehicle

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Three runaways from a Pittsburg youth home were detained Tuesday night after they allegedly stole a vehicle and led police and sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase.

A Pittsburg Police Department news release said that an officer checking out a report of suspicious activity in the 800 block of East Jackson Street at 11:11 p.m. encountered a Chevrolet Suburban traveling at a high rate of speed without any headlights on and gave pursuit.

The officer stopped chasing the Suburban when it left city limits on Langdon Lane. But the vehicle crashed minutes later at the intersection of U.S. Highway  69 and Kansas Highway 400. The three occupants fled on foot but were caught by Crawford County sheriff’s deputies.

A 17-year-old suspect believed to have been the driver was admitted to Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg for treatment of injuries.

Police say the Suburban had been stolen from a residence in the 600 block of East Jackson Street, and the driver and two 15-year-old passengers have been charged with motor vehicle theft. The driver also has been charged with felony eluding. His name has yet to be released by police.
