Inmate attempts suicide at McDonald County Jail

PINEVILLE, Mo. — An inmate who tried to hang himself Monday night at the McDonald County Jail  was taken to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin after other inmates intervened in the suicide attempt.

McDonald County Sheriff Michael Hall said prisoners called for the assistance of jailers and deputies at 11:16 p.m. after discovering an inmate in his cell with a noose around his neck. The other inmates got him down and initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation until jailers and deputies arrived, the sheriff said.

The inmate, whose name was being withheld pending notification of family, was taken by ambulance to the hospital in Joplin. A news release early this morning did not state what his medical condition was at the time.
