Inmate who attempted suicide died at hospital

PINEVILLE, Mo. — A McDonald County inmate who hanged himself in a jail cell Monday night later died  at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin.

Robert Mason, 36, of Anderson, died in the intensive care unit of the hospital Wednesday night, the McDonald County sheriff’s office said in a news release today.

Other inmates discovered Mason hanging in a cell of the jail, got him down and initiated resuscitation efforts while calling for jailers. While the inmates and jail staff were able to keep him alive, he was taken to the hospital in an unresponsive state.

Sheriff Michael Hall said Mason had been in jail since his arrest Jan. 21 on drug and child endangerment charges.
