Aroma prompts evacuation of mall temporary school

Students at the Joplin High School mall campus were temporarily evacuated from the building Monday morning after a malfunction of a heating and air-conditioning unit.

The school was evacuated at about 9 a.m. after reports of a pungent, smoky smell, so safety personnel could check the premises for signs of a fire, according to a spokeswoman for Joplin Schools.

No fire was found; students returned to class at about 9:30 a.m.

Superintendent C.J. Huff said a faulty belt in one of the building’s air-conditioning and heating roof units was likely the cause of the problem.
