Michigan man faces burglary charge in store break-in

A 50-year-old man has been charged with breaking into a Joplin liquor store and stealing a bottle of whiskey and a bag of Doritos.

Police responded to an alarm about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday at Alp’s Discount Liquor & Smoke shop, 2602 S. Main St., and discovered that the glass in the front door had been broken out with a chunk of concrete.

Lt. Matt Stewart of the Joplin Police Department said surveillance video was reviewed, and an officer recognized the burglar as a man with whom he had contact earlier that night near 32nd Street and Missouri Avenue. Stewart said the officer went looking for the man, located him at 32nd and Main streets, and arrested him.

Franklin C. Smith, 50, of Wyandotte, Mich., was charged with second-degree burglary.
