One of the occupants of a two-story home on Pearl Avenue in Joplin awoke in time to alert the others to a fire early Sunday that caused extensive damage.
The Joplin Fire Department was responding to a 2:45 a.m. report of smoke in the area when occupants were spotted escaping from the home in the 200 block of South Pearl Avenue.
Fire Chief Mitch Randles said in a news release that firefighters were greeted by smoke and fire coming from the second story.
Although the fire caused extensive damage to the kitchen and bedrooms, no injuries were reported, Randles said. The fire chief said the cause of the fire remained under investigation Monday.
The rental home is owned by Larry Courtney, of Joplin, according to the fire report.

The nonfatal shooting of a 25-year-old man at a Joplin residence on May 13 has been deemed justified by authorities. Jacob B. Boykin, 21, of Joplin, shot Justin S. Johnson, 25, of Carterville, once in the chest with a small-caliber handgun at 5260 E. Sunny Acres Lane.
