Carthage man dies in traffic accident west of Vinita

From staff reports

— A 23-year-old Carthage man was killed in a traffic accident Wednesday afternoon on the Will Rogers Turnpike, three miles west of Vinita, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Ethan S. Giett died at the scene of the accident at 4:19 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of the turnpike, the state patrol said.

Giett was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes when his car struck the driver’s side rear wheel of a tractor-trailer truck, and spun off the road and rolled an undetermined number of times down an embankment, throwing him from the vehicle, which then landed on top of him, the patrol said.

The driver of the truck rig, Matthew A. Baker, 30, of Monroe City, Mo., escaped injury, the patrol said.

• A Stark City man was injured in a motorcycle-car collision at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. Highway 60, a half-mile east of Neosho in Newton County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Stephen L. Aulick, 63, was taken by ambulance to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, the state patrol said.

Aulick was riding an eastbound motorcycle that collided with a southbound pickup truck driven by Ray E. Pilkenton, 32, of Neosho, when Pilkenton failed to yield at an intersection and pulled into the path of Aulick, the patrol said.
