Man facing felony weapon charge in threat case

A 24-year-old man is facing a felony weapon charge after he allegedly got out of his vehicle armed with a handgun Monday night on Moffet Avenue and threatened to kill a man who had yelled at him to slow down.

Joplin police Lt. Matt Stewart said a father who was riding bikes with his children about 6:15 p.m. on Moffet Avenue between 15th and 17th streets told police that he heard a vehicle’s tires squeal and saw a driver accelerating recklessly. He said he yelled at the driver to slow down.

The driver stopped, got out with a gun and threatened to kill him before driving off, the man told police. Stewart said the man reported the vehicle’s license number, and officers stopped the vehicle about 8:40 p.m. near 20th and Main streets. He said a gas-powered BB gun was found inside the vehicle, and Samuel J. Hughes, 12216 Aspen Road, Lot 6, was arrested and charged with unlawful use of a weapon.
