Death of baby in McDonald County subject of probe

LANAGAN, Mo. — The McDonald County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of a 2-month-old girl from Lanagan.

Sheriff’s deputies and Lanagan police were called Sunday to a home in Lanagan. A baby was taken to an area hospital by ambulance after a 911 call reporting that the child had stopped breathing. The baby eventually was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The mother told sheriff’s deputies that she fell asleep while breast-feeding the infant and awoke to find her no longer breathing. She told investigators that she then placed the baby in a bassinet, woke up her husband and called for help.

The sheriff’s office said two other children living in the home have been removed and placed in foster care while an investigation of the death is in progress. Another baby of the mother previously died at about the same age and under suspicious circumstances, according to the sheriff’s office.

No charges had been filed in the case by Monday afternoon.

The sheriff’s office was not releasing the names of the deceased child and her parents while the death remains under investigation.
