Carthage man receives prison term in robbery

JOPLIN, Mo. — A Jasper County judge assessed a 21-year-old defendant six years in prison Friday in a case involving the robbery of man at a Carthage motel.

David J. Wiley pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree burglary in a plea deal setting the term he was to receive at six years and waiving his right to a sentencing-assessment report. Wiley had been charged with second-degree robbery, which carries from five to 15 years in prison.

A probable-cause affidavit filed in the case alleges that Wiley, of Carthage, and Ronald S. Davis, 35, of Wentworth, assaulted and robbed a third man April 7 in a room at the Guest House Motel in Carthage.

The victim entered the room, and Wiley hit him several times and threw him on a bed, according to the affidavit. Davis then put a choke hold on him, and they stole his wallet, cellphone and $243 cash that he had in a sock, the affidavit alleges. They took his pants off before leaving and warned him not to get up off the floor or he would be shot.

Wiley told an investigator with the Carthage Police Department that they had sold the victim some fake methamphetamine and claimed the victim pulled out a pair of scissors as a weapon prior to them attacking him.

Davis has yet to have a preliminary hearing on the charge. But Wiley waived his hearing in June and sought a quick plea deal rather than exercise his right to a trial.

Wiley has been on probation for prior convictions of theft and possession of a controlled substance. The judge ordered that the new prison term run concurrent to any other sentences he must serve.
