Rural La Russell man facing assault charge, probation violation

CARTHAGE, Mo. — A rural La Russell resident has been charged with a felony assault on a Sarcoxie man near Carthage.

Capt. Derek Walrod of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department said Jason L. Harper, 31, was arrested in connection with an assault of Jeffrey Strahley, 42, on private property on Esther Road.

Harper, who was charged with first-degree assault, remained in custody Tuesday at the Jasper County Jail in Carthage on a $20,000 bond. He also is facing an alleged probation violation for which no bond has been set.

A probable-cause affidavit states that Harper hit Strahley as he was walking away and knocked him to the ground. He then allegedly got on top of Strahley and hit him several more times before picking him up and ramming his head into the bumper of a truck. The affidavit alleges that Harper, who claimed he was defending himself, then hit Strahley several more times before stopping.

Strahley was taken to a hospital with a concussion and injuries to his face and ribs, according to the affidavit.
