Man accused of hitting clerk with liquor bottle

A man’s alleged attempt to shoplift two bottles of liquor Tuesday afternoon from the Price Cutter store in Joplin led to his arrest on a robbery charge.

Joplin police Cpl. Chuck Niess said Terry L. Long, 27, 11319 Route FF, was arrested after an incident about 4 p.m. at the store in the 1800 block of Maiden Lane.

Niess said a female clerk tried to stop Long as he was leaving the store because she reportedly had observed him concealing two bottles of liquor in his pants. When confronted by the clerk, he tried to give her back one of the bottles. When she insisted that he give up the second one as well, Long allegedly hit her in the face with the bottle, Niess said.

Niess said customers intervened and helped detain Long until police arrived. The clerk did not require immediate medical attention, he said.

Long, who was charged Wednesday with second-degree robbery, remained in custody at the Joplin City Jail on $3,500 bond.
