Joplin man faces felony charge after handgun incident

ORONOGO, Mo. —  A Joplin man has been charged with a felony weapon offense for allegedly pointing a handgun at another man in Oronogo.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, in a news release, said the department received a call at 12:12 a.m. Saturday reporting an incident on Central Street in Oronogo. The caller said a man had struck another man in the head, pointed a gun at him and threatened to kill him. The two men had left together in a vehicle, the department said.

A sheriff’s deputy spotted the vehicle a short time later at a convenience store in Airport Drive and contacted the occupants. The driver of the vehicle, Travis S. Wyrick, 23, allegedly had been drinking and was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and driving with a revoked license. A felony charge of unlawful use of a weapon was added after further investigation, according to the department.

The department did not release the name of the man at whom Wyrick allegedly pointed the weapon.
